Local Filmmakers Night Features “The Best of Big Screen Showcase” – A collection of films from The Young MediaMakers film contest.

On Wednesday, March 29th, at the Eureka High School Lecture Hall, Local Filmmakers Night screening series will be presenting a collection of short films by the Young Media Makers Film Contest.

The Young Media Makers’ annual Big Screen Showcase is the only juried film festival in Northern California for youth and teens. Youth may enter films in several categories that include: animation, commercial, public service announcements, narrative (comedy, drama, social issue), documentary and experimental films.

The Young Media Makers organization was started in 1999 by Barbara Domanchuk, with grants from the Humboldt Area Foundation and North Coast Cultural Trust, with the goal of teaching the filmic language of shot types and sound design. The first Big Screen Showcase contest took place in 2000, with Junior Media Divisions for ages 8 to 13 and Senior Divisions for ages 14 to 22. Since 2005, the Big Screen Showcase is an international showcase, with multiple entries from England and New Zealand.  Additional distribution is given  to the winners through the screening of winners at the Chicago International Film Festival Youth Division, Access Humboldt (with Archive) and other opportunities.

Local Filmmakers Night, a collaboration between Access Humboldt, Humboldt-Del Norte Film Commission and Eureka High School Media Club, is a screening series that supports and promotes the local film community. These events offers an inside look at the filmmaking process by encouraging the filmmakers to share their challenges and learning.

Following the screening, attendees can enjoy Q & A session, movie trivia, prizes, and a reception at the adjacent Access Humboldt's Community Media Center

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Screening starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 per person and all are welcome to attend.
