February's Local Filmmakers Night- "Artists Who Animate"

On Wednesday, February 7th, at the Eureka High School Lecture Hall, Local Filmmakers Night screening series will be presenting a collection of short animated films from the Artists Who Animate group.
Artists Who Animate consists of 5 local artists. Steven Vander Meer is an internationally known animator - whose recent short film Salmon Deadly Sins was drawn on 3x5 inch index cards, "flip book style"... a dichotomy between complete order and utter chaos. Amy Uyeki is a multi-media artist whose black and white animation was featured in the PBS documentary - Searchlight Serenade: Big Bands in the WWII Japanese American Incarceration Camps. She often tries to combine media to add layers of meaning, in order to challenge the viewer's concept of the material. Brent Evinston is prolific emerging artist who explores the link between perception and belief through drawing, printmaking, sculpture, animation and musical composition. He sees his work as a way to manage the conversation in our mind and integrate reason with emotion. Julie McNiel is a teaching artist with the Prison Arts Project, and a recipient of the 2011 Victor T. Jacoby Award for animation. She uses a digital camera and stop-motion software to produce short pieces that incorporate raw, hand-drawn images and collage. Kyle Couture learned animation at the Kansas City Art Institute. He likes to explore themes that deal with realization that reality is often not what it’s perceived to be.

Local Filmmakers Night, a collaboration between Access Humboldt, Humboldt-Del Norte Film Commission and Eureka High School Media Club, is a screening series that supports and promotes the local film community. These events offers an inside look at the filmmaking process by encouraging the filmmakers to share their challenges and learning.
